Chapter Eight

Shane awoke just in time to hear what Hodge had said. He kept his eyes closed and pretended to still be asleep. He didn’t want Morgan to know that he now knew what had probably happened. Mostly, Shane didn’t want Morgan to worry about him. Shane would be doing enough of that for both of them. If he did nothing else, Shane had to find a way to free Morgan from their bond. He didn’t deserve to be stuck with a puppy as a mate.

“Okay, everyone. Let’s not panic.” Stone let go of Loren then picked up one of the wash bins. Morgan picked up one and Jon got the last one.

After emptying them into the river, they placed them on the kitchen table to air dry.

“Let’s just see what happens tonight.” Stone and the others moved over to the chairs encircling the fire pit. “We might be making a big deal over nothing.”

“Right.” Morgan picked up the bag holding Shane and placed it in his lap.

Shane stopped feigning sleep, but he didn’t feel much like talking. Instead, he just snuggled against the clothing underneath him in the bag.

“Anyone want a fire tonight?” Jon asked.

No one seemed to want one. Instead, they sat and watched the sun set. After that, night fell around the group, but the stars seemed to give them plenty of light.

“Man, someone tell a joke,” Allister said.

“I guess no one’s feeling particularly funny right now.” Jon took Channing’s hand.

“We need something to distract us.” Hennessey rose to his feet. “I’m going to get a beer. Anyone else want one?” When no one did, he went off on his own.

“Maybe we just need to surf the feeling.” Channing smiled at Jon.

“Surf it?” Alistair asked.

“Don’t fight against feeling unsettled. Just let the feeling be.”

Shane had always made a point to ignore his negative feelings. The idea of embracing them seemed almost alien. Then again, he had nothing to lose. So he sat there in the bag of clothes, letting his fear fill him. At first, it felt truly awful, but then he realized his life for the last five years had been nothing but running from fear. Sitting down with it as if it were a barely known acquaintance wasn’t as bad as he thought it might be.

After a long stretch of silence, Xander sang a song in a language Shane didn’t recognize. His voice was low and heavy, reminding Shane of an opera singer, yet the tune itself felt surprisingly light.

When he finished, everyone applauded.

“What was that?” Shane asked Morgan, who directed the question to Xander.

“Just something I’ve been working on.”

“It’s an original? Wow. Is everyone in this pack that talented or have I just been a slacker?”

“You’ve had other things to deal with.” Morgan took him out of the bag and placed him against his chest.

“How much longer until the moon rises?” Shane kept his gaze on the cliff.

“I don’t know.” Morgan rubbed behind his ears, making his eyes roll back. “Soon.”

They sat in silence again.
